Generic Needs

1. Matching tourists needs with products
- list tourist basic needs
- ways in which their needs can be satisfied
- divide each need into specific needs and find ways to satisfy them
- divide each need into specific needs, join similar needs and satisfy them together

2. Matching tourists problems with products
- create a list of problems
- come up with ways in which to remove, minimise or better them

3. Matching tourist needs to market segments
- list tourists basic needs or problems
- list possible tourism industry market segments
- create possible opportunities by matching problems to market segments


Creativity Methods

Creativity Methods of generating Ideas are subdived into 7 categories. These Include:

Manipulating existing Porducts or services:
1)This can be done by changing the identity of the product through use of colour or shape as well as durability and size.

2)Using different materials and mixing the product up this can be done through the combination of products.
3)Change the packaging and adding something new and appliable to the design.

Attribute Analysis
1) This will change the components of the excisting product to make it more appealing

Problem Redefinition
1)This will analyse ways that the excisting problem within the product can be fixed to suit consumers needs better

Forced Connections
1)This makes a connection between two varying ideas.

Mind Mapping
1) This involves writing down ideas that link to a dominant idea.

Brainstorming
1) Recognise the Problem
2)Gain peoples oppinions and ideas
3) Lastly reach an agreement on an idea

Metaphorical Analogy
1) This is the linking of products and results that appear to have no link with one another but can result in a new product or success


Protecting Your Ideas

1. Secrecy
- beware of telling your business idea to anyone because they could use your idea
- get them to sign a secrecy agreement before telling them

2. Patents
- can patent your product which is new to the market
- patent: a licence that allows only yourself to produce and market your product for 20 years
- provisonal patent: if you not ready to use your idea you can get a licence to secure your idea for 1 year

3. Trademarks
- trademark: word, symbol that identifies the producer of the product or process
- register the trademark in order to ensure that no one will use the name
- can affect marketing of your product therefore be careful

4. Copyright
- do not copy anything that is copyright
- can copyright by printing author's name, 'copyright' and the date


Everyday activities

Shopping:
useful questions to ask when shopping:
- Could this item/service be improved?
- What items are missing?
-Can this item be made more affordable?
-Can the item be designed better?
-Is the item aimed at different segements?
-Is the service delivery quick?

Media:
With various types of media ask yourself this question? How can it be improved or promoted?

Talking to people:
Find out from friends or family, which types of products which can be inhanced?

Household duties:
With various household duties such as cooking and cleaning, think about how these can be more improved.

Watching children and babies:
Think about new designs and games and any new services that could help with the quality of their holiday.

Holidays:
When one is on holiday one often sees stuff one doesn't see at home. And think how products or services offered be improved.

Sports and hobbies:
When playing or watching a sport, think about products or services are missing or could be better inhanced.


Turning Ideas Into Opportunities

 Firtly one has to Identify a Good Idea, this can be done by the following
*Is there a need for the product
*Is it something you enjoy
*You have the ability
*The product differentiates from others
*Is it sustainable.

What you need to turn ideas into opportunities include

* Knowing your strengths- through knowing your skills and having the motivation,as well as understanding your product.
You also need to enhance your skills

*Contacts-its about who you know not what you know

*Finance-Never ask family and make sure you have enough capital as lack of it is the main reason for failure.


Identify Opportunities

1. Will it be worthwhile?
- identify factors which wil make your business idea successful
- e.g. dressmaking business you need to think of things such as being able 
  to do needle work and the ability to read dress patterns

2. Will you make a profit?
- Profit = (selling price - cost price) x volume - expenses
- selling price: price product is sold
- cost price: cost to produce product
- volume: number of units to be sold
- expenses: overhead expenses occured


From Other Sources

Check Foreign Products & Services- Look for products that are overseas that South Africa could develop.
Visit a tourist Facility- When Tourist are in need of Information they can visit Tourism information Centres & then also on the street corners there will be an information Stand.
Copy Others- We must create new ideas rather than using existing ideas.
Revive or modify an old product- Travel Agents or Tour Operators can look at older ideas and develop new ones.
Visit Trade Shows- Visit Tourism Expo's to view different ideas and make use of them.
Examine expired Patents- Look at products that have not been licensed and see if they can help you with your ideas.
Examine import & Export statistics- If a Tourist needs information about products that are imported into South Africa visit The Department of Trade & industry.
